Are you ready for the 2009 season????????

That's right!!!! It's Speedweeks 2009 - the week leading up to the Daytona 500 - the first race of the NASCAR season! I decided to throw a party for myself to celebrate the start of the season begining with the Budweiser Shootout which is a short race sponsored by a beverage I don't drink. Each car manufacturer in NASCAR (Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Toyota) had 7 cars in the race. I made ticket invitations for Amy, Abbie & Jeremy and last night was the party. Upon arrival everyone received their pit pass with the lineup by manufacturer and the rules of the race.

We had some great food!

The Spread
Caution Cupcakes complete with tires and lugnuts

Kevin Harvick's Mexicali Dip

We also had pizza on a stick, easy fruit salad, and red flag punch!

We also had two contests - each of had had a team - Amy was Team Chevy, Abbie Team Ford, Jeremy Team Dodge & I was team Toyota (guess what Kyle Busch drives). Whomever's manufacturer was leading the race after the first segments won NASCAR driver/girlfriend glasses. You can figure out who won those in the pictures at the end. The manufacturer that won received a trophy - That was Amy & Kevin Harvick for Team Chevy!

We also got our opportunity to be the driver!

Team Chevy - Amy
Team Dodge - Jeremy
Team Toyota! (Me)
Team Ford - Abbie

I had a lot of fun putting it together despite all the people who made fun of me for it and I think the non NASCAR fans had good time and will hopefully get some use out of their goody bags! Thanks to those who came! Maybe I'll throw one in Utah for the 4th of July race if I make it home to visit!

What I learned from my students - Semester Finals

This semester we've learned about culture, the Middle East, and South Asia (India and surrounding countries) so this is what I learned from their tests/projects at the end of the semester:

1. the Indians migrated to Venezuela and became Amerindians

2. Amerindians have the most people because they are the native ethnic group. - if they migrated how did they become the native ethnic group

3. Black people come from Africa so they were probably the original ethnic group there. - we've now dispelled the myth that black is an ethnic group in Africa

4. The Kurds migrated from Kurdistan. Since they are fighting to create a Kurdistan - it might be a problem to migrate from there.

5. Turkish cuisine is very common food to eat........(wait for it)....... in Turkey! I think this is self explanitory

6. Christopher Columbus (personally) converted the natives to Christianity in the Americas and Costa Rica - he was a busy man sailing, discovering, claiming land and converting all of the Americas to Christianity

7. A majority of the population of South Africa is African-Americans. African Americans are an ethnic group in Africa?

8. the Hebrew Language is a dead language but is still used and developed by the Jews. I couldn't believe that someone knew that there are dead languages - but don't tell the Israelis their language is dead

9. If there were more Christians in the country bread and wine would increase in value. Where this idea came from I have no idea!

10. On average women can have up to seven kids is their lifetime. - I didn't know I could only have up to seven kids in my lifetime

11. The Hindus & Muslims in Israel and Gaza Strip commence in shooting and stone throwing daily. This is a new development. I wonder what the Israelis are doing while the Hindus and Muslims are fighting in Israel.

And the winner is.......

This past weekend I was a "Producer" for the stake youth activity 24 Hour Roadshows. I admit I was a little skeptical at first. The plan was to show up Friday night at 7, divide into groups of 25 youth each then write and rehearse a road show to perform Saturday night at 7pm.

They stressed that this is a youth activity and that the adult "Producers" were to guide and help but not to write, etc. I had an amazing group of youth, really, I was impressed with them from the start. However, by the 10 pm Friday night we had a great premise and even a 15 minute skit, but no real plot and several references to rated R movies. Needless to say I wasn't very comfortable with the whole thing. The stake approved their script though and let it go. When we got back Saturday morning at 9 am, I told our group that I wasn't comfortable with what they had written and asked if they were willing to re-write. Several of the youth agreed and one asked that we kneel in prayer and ask for inspiration. Within an hour we had a brand new script, Gospel Defenders, and were well on our way to have a great roadshow!! I was impressed so much by them and their willingness to do what their leaders asked of them. We had no fights or arguments and everyone felt included and needed.

When it was all over we won two awards: Best use of dance and music and Best overall roadshow. Goes to show you what obedience and prayer can accomplish.

Best line from the roadshow:
Laban is laying, passed out on the stage and Nephi walks in with his arms out in front of him, like he's going to catch something, looking up into the sky: "Laban is a pretty big guy, if he's going to fall into my hands, I hope I can catch him." Tripping on Laban, "Looks like I already missed."
Priests are hilarious!!
